In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, where seamless connectivity is paramount, Airtel has emerged as a frontrunner in shaping India’s 5G future. With a commitment to innovation and customer-centricity, Airtel’s 5G rollout promises to revolutionize the way we live, work, and connect. This blog post provides a comprehensive review of Airtel 5G, examining its speed, plans, coverage, and real-world experiences.

Exploring Airtel 5G: A New Era of Connectivity
Airtel 5G represents a significant leap forward in mobile connectivity in India. With faster speeds, lower latency, and increased capacity, 5G is poised to unlock a world of possibilities for consumers and businesses alike. Airtel, as a leading telecom operator, is at the forefront of this digital transformation, aiming to bridge the digital divide and empower individuals across the nation.
As we delve into the intricacies of Airtel’s 5G offering, we’ll explore the various facets that make it a compelling choice for today’s tech-savvy users. From understanding the technology behind 5G to evaluating its real-world impact, this review provides valuable insights into the future of connectivity in India.
What Sets Airtel 5G Apart in the Indian Market?
Airtel’s strategic approach to 5G deployment has positioned it as a key player in the Indian market. Randeep Sekhon, the driving force behind Bharti Airtel’s 5G vision, emphasizes the transformative potential of this technology. Airtel’s focus on utilizing a diverse range of spectrum bands, including the efficient 900 MHz spectrum, ensures wider coverage and better indoor penetration.
Furthermore, Airtel’s collaboration with global technology giants like Nokia and Ericsson underscores its commitment to delivering a world-class 5G experience. By leveraging the expertise of these industry leaders, Airtel aims to create a robust and future-proof 5G infrastructure that supports the growing demands of data-intensive applications and services. This strategic approach not only enhances Airtel’s competitive edge but also contributes significantly to the overall development of 5G in India.
Airtel is also utilizing 5G NSA (Non-Standalone) technology, which allows for wider device support and is less capital expenditure intensive to roll out. Compared to 5G SA (Standalone), the raw bandwidth available with 5G NSA is greater as it leverages both 4G and 5G bandwidth. However, a slight drawback of this approach is that it tends to be more energy-hungry. The company is primarily using the N78 band, i.e., the 3500 MHz band for 5G in most areas, and in some cities, they have started to re-farm the 4G spectrum for 5G use. Reports indicate that Airtel is also using the N1 (2100 MHz) band for both 5G and 4G in certain locations. Furthermore, Airtel has begun transitioning AirFiber users to their Standalone network and plans to shift their mobile users to 5G SA in the near future.
The company’s customer-centric approach is evident in its flexible 5G plans and its efforts to make 5G accessible to a wide range of users. As the 5G landscape continues to evolve, Airtel remains committed to innovation and providing its customers with the best possible connectivity experience.
5G SA vs. 5G NSA: Which is Right for You?
The advent of 5G technology has brought two prominent deployment architectures to the forefront: 5G Standalone (SA) and 5G Non-Standalone (NSA). Understanding the differences between these models is critical for users, especially as Indian telecom giants like Airtel and Jio adopt these technologies.
What is 5G NSA (Non-Standalone)?
5G Non-Standalone (NSA) is designed to work with existing 4G LTE infrastructure, enabling a faster rollout of 5G services. In this model, 5G connectivity relies on the 4G core network for its control functions, utilizing 5G for enhanced speed and capacity.

What is 5G SA (Standalone)?
Conversely, 5G Standalone (SA) operates independently of 4G infrastructure. This architecture is built around a new core network specifically designed for 5G. It offers full capabilities, including ultra-low latency, better device connectivity, and advanced features like network slicing.

Airtel vs. Jio in 5G Deployment Technology
In India, the landscape is shaped by how major telecom providers implement these technologies:
Airtel is currently utilizing 5G NSA for its network. This allows the company to provide 5G services quickly while relying on its existing 4G infrastructure. However, Airtel is in the process of transitioning its AirFiber service to 5G SA and plans to extend this transition to its mobile users shortly. This move will enable Airtel to unlock the full potential of 5G technology, offering enhanced services and capabilities.
Jio, on the other hand, has chosen to deploy 5G SA from the very beginning. This forward-thinking approach allows Jio to take full advantage of 5G’s capabilities right away, offering users lower latency and a superior digital experience without reliance on any 4G network.
Airtel 5G Coverage in India: 2024 Update
As we approach the end of 2024, Airtel has made significant strides in expanding its 5G coverage throughout India. With a focus on urban centers and key rural regions, Airtel’s 5G network now reaches over 90% of major cities, enabling users to experience lightning-fast internet speeds and improved connectivity.
The company has also launched initiatives to ensure that underserved areas are not left behind, rolling out partnerships with local governments and organizations to promote digital literacy and access. As digital transformation accelerates, Airtel’s commitment to enhancing its 5G infrastructure is paving the way for innovations in various sectors such as healthcare, education, and commerce, thus positioning India as a leader in the global digital landscape.

Join me on a journey through North Bengal, enhanced by the connectivity of Airtel 5G.
Day 1: KRISHNAnagar
On November 14th, the trip began with a journey from home to Krishnanagar for a night stay. Airtel 5G Speed was as follows:

The speed was pretty good in my opinion as it was tested indoors during peak time.
Day 2: Gajoldoba
On the second day of the trip, I was staying at the interior of Gajoldoba, where, unfortunately, Airtel 5G was not available. Nevertheless, the 4G speeds were pretty good!

Day 3: Kolakham
Even at Kolakham today, I couldn’t connect to Airtel’s 5G network. However, the 4G speeds were above average, which is ultimately what’s most important!

Day 4: Panbu
Today at Panbu, the situation was even worse because I had absolutely no signal on my secondary sim (Jio) and only had maybe around 50-60% 4G signal on my Airtel sim. Here’s how it performed:

Day 5: Gopal Dhara Tea Estate
Today, I am at Gopal Dhara Tea Estate with almost zero expectations of Airtel 5G and for better or for worse, my expectations were met. Airtel 4G was all that was available.

The speeds were fine, but what surprised me the most was the upload speed.
Overall, Airtel 5G is making strides in North Bengal, but there is still a need for more extensive propagation to fully realize its potential. In the interim, Airtel’s 4G network remains robust and more than capable of meeting daily connectivity needs. Users can continue to rely on 4G for seamless internet access, ensuring a satisfactory digital experience while waiting for 5G to expand further.
Airtel 5G vs. Jio 5G: A Comparative Analysis Based on User Experiences
When comparing user experiences on Airtel 5G and Jio 5G, several factors come into play. Users generally report that Airtel 5G offers slightly better coverage in areas where both networks are available, particularly indoors. The gaming experience on Airtel 5G is often lauded by users for its low latency, resulting in smoother gameplay and quicker response times.
However, Jio 5G has a slight edge in terms of availability, with its network present in a wider range of locations, including some remote areas. Ultimately, the best choice often boils down to specific needs and network availability in a given area. The competition between these two giants is driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of 5G user experiences in India.
